Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative has selected 14 students as this year's Washington Youth Tour Short Story Contest scholarship winners, and seven to serve as delegates on the Washington Youth Tour.
Each junior will receive a $1,000 scholarship for their creative writing submissions. The theme this year was how "Electric Cooperatives Connect" Tennessee communities with energy, education, broadband, economic development and more. The short stories selected demonstrated MLEC's core principles and described real examples of MLEC strengthening communities.
Additionally, the student at each high school receiving the highest score and residing with a MLEC member is offered a paid sponsorship on the Washington Youth Tour. This year's trip is June 16-22, and will be represented by students from Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Lewis and Perry counties. The WYT provides students with the opportunity to tour our nation's capital and meet with elected officials from their districts.
"Investing in young people and helping them achieve goals is important to us," says MLEC President and CEO Keith Carnahan. "At the same time, they are learning about the cooperative connection to improving the quality of life in our hometowns."
Co-ops really do connect with those we serve, and the Washington Youth Tour is a prime example of that. These students have bright futures, and we are honored to help!
