Travelers along Highway 70 East in Waverly can expect periodic lane closures between Hughey Lane and Trace Creek Road (mile markers 15.2 and 17.3) in the coming weeks. The closures will take place during the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Monday through Friday from January 20 to February 14.
During this time, Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative will be upgrading existing equipment and adding a new circuit to better serve existing members and meet the demand of new electric load in the area. The project, which will reap immediate and long-term reliability benefits, is expected to take about five months, and other lane closures will take place as the project progresses.
“A disruption to the flow of traffic on a busy road is never fun for drivers, and we understand it will create some delays,” says MLEC President and CEO Keith Carnahan. “Unfortunately, this is one time it can’t be helped for the safety of drivers and MLEC workers. These dates and times were approved by the State of Tennessee, and we’ll do everything we can to keep things moving.”
MLEC explained that this is a large operation job along a busy highway, and every precaution is being taken to keep everyone safe.
“Flaggers will be along the road when needed, and we encourage everyone to adhere to safety,” says Carnahan. “Remember to follow the Hands-Free Tennessee law, drive slowly through the work area and move to the other side of the highway as needed.”
