(April 17, 2023) — Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative members interested in opting out of scheduled spraying have until May 15th to make arrangements with the utility.
Spraying for rights of ways around power lines is set to begin this July in the majority of Humphreys County. The work is a part of MLEC’s goal to provide safe, reliable power and broadband by limiting disruptions from future vegetation growth.
The opt-out policy is offered to special situations where a property owner commits to maintaining the right of way through their own resources. The required distance of 20 feet on each side of the power line running through a property must be followed throughout the year.
Those who do not opt out can expect registered herbicides administered by federally licensed crews. Before application, contractors survey the land and prescribe an appropriate mix that slowly transitions the right of way into native grasses and flowering plants. All herbicides used are certified by the Environmental Protection Agency. The work is scheduled to be completed by September of this year.
If interested, contact your local MLEC office as soon as possible. The plan must be certified, and the form signed by Monday, May 15th. You can find your district’s office hours and contact info by visiting www.mlec.com/contact-us.
